North Somerset Athletic Club and Academy will be carrying a mock Olympic torch around Weston-super-mare’s Grand Pier for a 24 hour relay over the weekend of March 10 and 11.

The (mainly) Junior Club, with members from across the whole of North Somerset, anticipate around 250 of their youngsters will be involved, raising around £10,000 in the process.

This will be the fifth event, with the first one taking place in 2011, and will raise money for improvements to the club’s athletics facility in Clevedon, with a sizeable donation also going to Childrens Hospice South West.

It should be a colourful spectacle too as the theme for this year is ‘Commonwealth’ in a nod to the Commonwealth Games from The Gold Coast in Australia from April 8–15. Athletes are being asked to come dressed supporting their favourite Commonwealth Country

The event starts at noon on the Saturday and continues until noon on the Sunday, and the aim of the event is to keep at least one mock Olympic flame moving for the duration and to raise awareness of athletics in North Somerset. Television is once again expected, and some GB athletes are also anticipated.
